岡寺の寺号「龍蓋寺」とは、開祖の義淵僧正が、石の蓋で悪龍を池に封じ込めたことから名付けられたもの。龍の厄難を取り除いたことが厄除け信仰のはじまりと言われ、「日本最初の厄除け道場」として知られています。初午大祭では、厄除けの人のみならず、大勢の参拝客で賑わいを見せます。

Oka Temple's name "Ryugaiji" is named after an event when Buddhist priest Gien who is a founder locked up an evil dragon with a stone cover. It is told that removing the calamity of the dragon is the start of the cult of Yakuyoke and it is known as "the first Yakuyoke dojo in Japan". It is crowded with not only people who wish for warding off evil but many wor-shipers at Hatsuuma Grand Festival.
