桐生八木節まつりは元来、牛頭天王（素戔嗚尊）の祭礼であるため、桐生祇園祭（きりゅうぎおんまつり）とも呼ばれている。両毛最大規模の夏祭り。
桐生には江戸時代に制作された屋台が4台、明治が1台、昭和が1台、計6台が現存しており、これらの屋台は舞屋台（まいやたい）とも、巨大屋台とも云い、両袖を広げると間口は約7.5m、高さは二階建てで約6.6ｍ、奥行きは控えの間付で約6.4ｍというものです。
この屋台は彫刻の美しさ、襖絵の豪華さ、扁額の書など三位一体の動く祭礼建築としても評価は高いものです。
This is Ryomo’s largest summer festival. Kiryu has 4 floats made during the Edo period, 1 from Meiji, and 1 from the Showa period. These 6 floats are “mai-yatai” performing floats, meaning they are larger than most floats, standing 24.5 feet tall with 2 levels and an anti-chamber inside. They are beautifully sculptured, with beautifully painted fusuma and framed pictures, an excellent show of festival architecture as the art and float move together.
